Natuto akong maglaba, mamlantsa at mamalengke. - Jejomar C. Binay, UP College of Law

Iglesia ni Cristo crowd swells to over 10,000, renders parts of EDSA impassable

(UPDATED 9:28 p.m.) Heavy rain on Sunday early evening failed to dampen the resolve of Iglesia ni Cristo members as the number of protesters at EDSA-Shaw Boulveard, EDSA-Ortigas and in between swelled to more than 10,000 early evening on Sunday, radio dzBB has reported.

Citing figures from the Eastern Police District at past 9 p.m., GMA's radio station reported that there were 7,000 protesters at the corner of EDSA and Shaw Boulevard, 4,000 at the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue and 3,500 in between the two sites on both northbound and southbound lanes.

The EDSA-Ortigas area is where the Catholic Church's EDSA Shrine stands.

The crowd at both EDSA-Ortigas and EDSA-Shaw rendered both the northbound and southbound lanes of the following points on EDSA not passable:

- EDSA Ortigas
- EDSA Megamall
- Shaw underpass
- Shaw service roads
- Timog flyover.

The crowd rendered both northbound and southbound lanes at EDSA Ortigas impassable.

Some members even shouted 'walang aalis' amid the heavy downpour.

The demonstrators went under the Ortigas flyover to seek cover from the rain.

As early as late Sunday afternoon, there have been reports of Iglesia ni Cristo members blocking the southbound lane of EDSA Ortigas.

A report on "24 Oras Weekend" aired Sunday showed some members of the Iglesia ni Cristo heading to the EDSA Shrine.

Footage showed protesters had occupied half of the Ortigas flyover near the shrine, which marks the site of two popular revolutions.

The crowd initially gathered at the northbound lane near the EDSA Shrine and a mall on Friday night.

Many of the Iglesia protesters have been at EDSA-Shaw, where there is free food, portalets, and mobile phone charging stations, since Friday, a separate "24 Oras Weekend" report said.

The report noted that the permit granted by Mandaluyong City requires protesters to stay within a 1,200-sq.m. area at EDSA-Shaw but that the crowd has already spilled out from their designated area.

"Hinihiling namin ang inyong pakikipag-kooperasyon para magkaroon ng kapayapaan at panatiliin ang maintenance of peace and order dito sa pinagaganapan ng rally ng Iglesia ni Cristo," Sr. Supt. Elmer Jamias, Eastern Police District director, said in the report.

‘Respect the shrine’

In a set of guidelines issued to Catholics, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines on Sunday called for respect for the EDSA Shrine and for obedience to the law.

"The EDSA Shrine is a Catholic center of worship. It is a church. There is a Catholic priest assigned to it. We ask that all respect the sacred character of the Edsa Shrine," the CBCP said in a statement signed by its president, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

"Unless it is convincingly shown that a law offends moral precepts, obedience to the law is a Christian duty. Sons and daughters of the Church cannot be less observant of the law than other citizens of the Republic," it added. -NB/JST/JDS, GMA News

Be patient, Rodrigo Duterte tells supporters Clamor for mayor to run for President grows louder as elections near

DAVAO CITY—Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has appealed to his supporters to give him more time to decide whether to join the 2016 presidential race.

Duterte spoke at a rally here organized by the Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for President Movement. The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) supported the push for Duterte to run for President.

“Give me some time (to decide),” Duterte said at the rally as the crowd of at least 10,000 people roared in approval.

“I’ll talk to my family again,” he said.

The feisty mayor has repeatedly said he was not interested in running for President because he has no money to sustain a national campaign.

He said while some big election spenders had assured him of funding, he had to turn them down because he did not want to incur debts of gratitude.

Duterte also said one of the reasons he is begging off from the presidential race is his age. The mayor is now 70 years old.

He also said his family is opposed to the idea.

“My daughter (former Mayor Sara) Inday is already angry at me. She is the most vocal. She told me I’m old already. Her mother also said no. But I think I need to talk to them,” he said at the rally.

Duterte said if Sara continues to oppose the idea of him running for President, “I will bring her here and we will make her run instead.”

Duterte was also apparently surprised at the large crowd that gathered here to urge him to accept the challenge of running for President.

“If my children will see this, they might change their mind already. They must be here somewhere” he said.

As the crowd roared and chanted “run Duterte run,” the mayor said: “It’s nearing, just be patient. Just give me some more time to talk to my family. I hope you will respect that.”

He then teased the crowd by posing them a question.

“Pray tell, who will lead Davao if I’m no longer here (as mayor)? Who will the criminals fear?” he said.

Duterte, as usual, drew a scenario of his presidency by saying he will institute massive reforms in government because he did not want to become a “jester or a puppet.”

“If they try to impeach me, I will declare a revolution,” he added, citing former President Joseph Estrada’s case, which sent the crowd roaring and chanting his name.

“My responsibility is to see to it that everyone is comfortable and safe. Compassion is not a weakness and violence is not a strength,” Duterte said as he denied anew that he ordered the killing of suspected criminals in the city.

He said he vowed to make Davao City a peaceful place and deaths had to be part of the process, although no extrajudicial killing has been carried out in the city.

He said he never ordered the police to just shoot and kill suspects because he fears karma.

“(Justice Secretary Leila) de Lima said I killed 1,000 persons. I have been mayor for 22 years and I only killed 1,000? That’s cheap,” Duterte said, adding that the peace and order problem could not be solved by killing suspects.

“That’s not the way democracy operates,” he said.

Mar Masanguid, prime mover of the Duterte for President Movement, said they did not expect Duterte to show up at the rally although they had invited him.

He said Duterte’s presence at the rally indicated that the mayor was softening on his earlier stand against running for President.

“We’ll have to wait. I think it will only be a matter of time before he announces his candidacy,” Masanguid said.

During the rally, a video of communist leader Jose Ma. Sison endorsing Duterte was also played.

Duterte reacted to Sison’s endorsement by saying: “This is the time the generals will shoot us. But it has always been like that.” Karlos Manlupig and Allan Nawal, Inquirer Mindanao

Let's stick to the inconvenience you are causing other people. One of our officemates who lives in the EDSA-Shaw area couldn't sleep last night because of your megaphone-aided chanting. May dinudulot kayong perwisyo tapos pag may nagsalita, wag maki-issue?

Puro separation of church and state ang sinasabi nyo.

#edsatraffic #idlingcars #wastedfuel

PS: Okay, so ano issue?

Instead of meddling in INC affairs, the administration should focus on more pressing matters such as poverty alleviation and addressing the MRT problem. it would do well for the Palace and justice officials to deal with what's on their plate first - Jojo Binay

Good news everyone! The most awaited decision of the year has finally come and we’re all sure that this is worth it! Duterte for President

Mandaluyong grants permit for Iglesia ni Cristo rally until Sunday

The Mandaluyong City government has given permission to the Iglesia ni Cristo members to hold their protest rally at EDSA-Shaw Boulevard until Sunday.

In a phone interview with GMA News Online on Saturday, Mandaluyong local government public information officer Jimmy Isidro said a permit was issued to "contain" the protesters along the area.

"A permit was issued to contain them in one area," Isidro said.

He also assured the public that traffic to Makati, Caloocan, and Pasig will not be affected in the scheme.

Meanwhile, Isidro noted that the crowd on Shaw Boulevard was estimated at 1,000 as of 9:30 a.m.

He also said that the local government has an "open communication" with the Iglesia ni Cristo heads.

"They are professional, sinusunod naman ang scope ng aming permit," he said. "Hindi rin sila nagkakalat, they clean up after themselves, walang problema.

The mass action began on Thursday in Manila, where thousands of Iglesia ni Cristo members spoke out against what they described as Justice Secretary Leila de Lima's meddling in the group's internal affairs.

The DOJ is looking into charges filed by former Iglesia ni Cristo minister Isaias Samson Jr. against the religious group's officials for allegedly detaining and harassing him and his family — an accusation denied by Iglesia ni Cristo officials.

On Friday, De Lima did not go to her DOJ office. She earlier said maintained that she was just doing her job in ordering an investigation on a complaint brought before them.

In Malacañang, Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma said the government is not meddling in the affairs of the Iglesia ni Cristo but is only making sure the country's laws are followed.

"Government's duty is to ensure that the laws of the land are complied with and does not wish to interfere in the internal affairs of any legitimate organization," Coloma said.

Protest moved to EDSA

On Friday afternoon, the protest moved to EDSA, with those who attended the protest in Manila marching to meet other members at the EDSA-Shaw intersection.

An earlier statement from the church said that Iglesia ni Cristo is merely defending religious freedom.

— RSJ, GMA News

ABS-CBN cameraman assaulted at Iglesia ni Cristo EDSA protest

Unidentified assailants reportedly mauled ABS-CBN cameraman Melchor Pinlac while he was filming the Iglesia ni Cristo protest at the EDSA Shrine.

Pinlac said that he was grabbed by the neck, then he was punched on the jaw, the body, and the back of the neck, according to a dzMM radio report. All the while, the crowd around him was chanting “biased, biased.”

According to Super Radyo dzBB, their reporter Olan Bola was shoved around during the encounter while trying to appease protesters. Bola was not injured.

Maybe it would be best if Secretary De Lima Faces them and explain the situation and why it's happening - Senator Grace Poe
